Rondell Veal, 36, attempted to slash his wrists and neck just days after police in Newark, DE, found his wife, Sherrie L. Campbell, stabbed to death inside their home.
He underwent surgery on Sunday night to repair his trachea following the suicide attempt, according to police sources.
Veal had been standing on the tracks of the 6 line when he tried taking his own life at around 5:30 p.m., the sources said.
Cops and EMS were called to the scene and rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he remained Sunday night.
Upon further investigation, authorities learned that Veal had been wanted for the fatal stabbing of his wife — and that he may have used the murder weapon to try and take his own life.
Cops were looking for a knife on the tracks at the southbound 6 line at Grand Central Station.William LopezCampbell, 34, was found dead from multiple stab wounds at around 11:45 p.m. Friday, according to officials.
She’s the city’s first homicide victim since 2014.
Officers had been performing a wellness check when they found her.
Newark Police issued an arrest warrant for Veal on the charges of first-degree murder and possession of a weapon while committing a felony after gathering evidence at the scene that linked him to the crime.
Detectives — assuming that he fled to the Big Apple — had been communicating with the NYPD before Veal’s suicide attempt, sources said.
Authorities were searching for the knife he used to slash himself on Sunday in the attempt to see if it matched Campbell’s wounds.
It is unclear if local cops will transport Veal back to Delaware or if Newark police will come and get him.
