The crime occurred about midnight Saturday in the 800 block of Ardmore Avenue as the victim walked to her car, Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Tim Zins said.
The man approached the woman from behind, knocked her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. Police did not elaborate on the nature of the assault.
The woman, who is in her 20s, fought the man off, but was injured in the attack. Her assailant was last seen running west toward Valley Drive.
The man was described as Latino, about 30 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 to 200 pounds. He wore a gray shirt and black sweat pants.
Police said the man might have been in the city’s downtown area earlier. Detectives are checking the area for security video.
Zins advised residents to stay aware of their surroundings and to call 911 if they believe they are being followed. Manhattan Beach residents should list the city’s dispatch center in their wireless phones to call directly to 310-545-4566.
