When Elizabeth Joice found out she was pregnant, she was overcome with joy because doctors told her she would never be able to have children. But doctors then told her that she would be forced to make a decision to take the live of her unborn baby to begin cancer treatment or put her own life in danger by forgoing it.
Joice pondered whether she should join a club of other courageous women who decided to protect their unborn babies. Ultimately, saving her baby was an easy decision.
“Having a kid was one of the most important things in the world to her,” her husband Max told The Post at the time. “She said, ‘If we terminate the pregnancy and it turns out I can’t have a baby [later], I’ll be devastated. She knew this might be her only chance.”
Ultimately, Liz was only able to spend seven weeks with her daughter before she passed away.
Now, through an amazing personalized app on the iPad, Joice’s baby is getting to hear her mother’s voice from the grave:
Lily will get to hear her mother’s voice and see video of her via an app created by director Christopher Henze, who made a documentary featuring Mrs Joice, called ’40 weeks’
‘It was like something out of a movie. We sat there and cried. We tried to tell stories, talk about all the great things,’ her husband Max Joice told the New York Post while talking about the film.
Mr Henze’s personalise iPad app includes games that feature Mrs Joice’s voice and also her singing.
Lily is now 16 months old.
An Australia news report provides further details:
“My mango,” says a voice as a juicy, tropical fruit appears. Later, it presents numbers, counting “13, 14, 15 …” all the way up to 30, as digits pop up on screen.
But her spirit lives on in Lily — and in the iPad. Thanks to her involvement in 40 Weeks, director Henze shot around 60 hours of footage of Liz — from her strolling on the beach to her announcing Lily was a girl, along with sweet footage of the tiny family cuddled up together.
The director became a close friend of the Joices, and following Liz’s death he put together a 13-minute-long video — “like a ‘Baby Einstein’ ” — for Lily with footage of Liz mixed with other kids TV shows including Yo Gabba Gabba!, Curious George and Barney & Friends.
When Brobee — the furry, green-striped character in Nickelodeon’s Yo Gabba Gabba! — sings “I’m going to eat,” Joice is seen eating grapes, mangoes and steak. She dances to the chorus of “There’s a party in my tummy,” swinging her pregnant belly.
As Curious George learns to count past 10, Joice says the numbers out loud. The numbers come from Joice happily declaring how many weeks pregnant she was.
There’s even a song about cleaning up, after Joice accidentally spilt a jar of tomato sauce on camera.
The idea is to open up more parts of the app as Lily gets older and is able to handle more video and audio from her mother.
