Prime Minister Theresa May is calling for a special election in the United Kingdom as the country negotiates its exit from the European Union.

“It is with strong conviction that I believe it is necessary to secure a strong and stable leadership this country needs,” May said outside No. 10 Downing Street Tuesday morning.
UK Parliament will hold a vote Wednesday to authorize the special election, which would be held on June 8.
May, who previously opposed sending Britons to the polls before the 2020 election, said Parliament was deeply divided on Brexit — forcing the snap election.
“The country is coming together, but Westminster is not,” May said. “Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit.”
She took swipes at some of the opposition parties, claiming they’ve hindered Brexit negotiations.
"If we do not hold a general election now, their political game playing will continue," May said.
If Parliament gives the green light, it will be the fourth major vote Britons have had to decide on in as many years.
In 2014, voters cast ballots on whether Scotland should become its own nation. That was followed up a year later with the UK’s regularly scheduled Parliamentary elections. And last year, the British voted on the controversial Brexit decision to leave the EU.
