The museum, which honors the Detroit 3 automakers for their contributions to the country, especially for national defense during World War II, is to break ground in September at the park at Martin and Campbell roads. The museum, which closed its original St. Clair Shores location in May, will relocate to the new 25,000-square-foot facility.
The construction, maintenance and administration of the museum will be funded by Ford Motor Co., FCA US LLC and General Motors Co. as well as regional defense contractors, a news release stated. The museum will display military vehicles and artifacts, and host historical programs that explore Michigan's impact on American national defense and security.
"This is a high honor for our city and most appropriate because the Tank Arsenal located in our city was the heart of the Arsenal of Democracy during World War II," Fouts said in the release.
The museum has a collection of dozens of interviews with local veterans who served in various wars including World War II, the Vietnam and Korean wars, according to the release.
