Pedro has lost more than 385 pounds, reaching a total body weight of 923 pounds. Although he remains one of the most obese men in the world, the recent weight loss gives him an opportunity to undergo surgery with less risk, according to the Center of Gastric Bypass in Mexico.

After spending three months under the care of Dr. Jose Castaneda Cruz, Pedro will undergo an operation at Jardines de Guadalajara Hospital.

The procedure comes after several years spent laying in a bed in his Aguascalientes home, a custom-made bed designed by his family to support his weight.

Castaneda, a surgeon specialized in obesity treatment, decided to take Pedro's case when he learmed about it through the Center of Gastric Bypass' social support program.

The medical team transferred Pedro to Guadalajara, where he underwent comprehensive health examinations and shock treatment so he could undergo surgery as soon as possible.

Pedro has been diagnosed with a series of serious diseases that put his life on the line: uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and hypothyroidism.

Pedro will undergo a gastric bypass with biliopancreatic diversion. The process will have two phases — in May his stomach will be reduced from its current five-liter capacity to just over 40 centiliters, and in November a second operation will be performed to decrease his nutrient absorption.

Pedro is expected to lose up to 50 percent of his remaining weight by November, and almost a third more after the second surgery.
